By March 31 the IAW website will be lovingly dissolved and the WomanSpirit Store will be closed. As the current manifestation of Imagine a Woman is released, you are invited to become its next manifestation. YES, Imagine a Woman will live on through YOU.
For those of you who have grown into the woman imagined in the poem, sharing the poem will always be an act of gratitude. You will continue to share the deep truth of the poem in your words, actions, and lives, and you will pass it on to your daughters and granddaughters, your clients and circle-sisters.
Many of you didn’t know such a woman existed until your read the “Imagine a Woman” poem for the first time. Until you were able to imagine her, she was unknown to you. Once imagined, she became your experience.
You now believe it is right and good you are a woman as you honor your experience and tell your stories. As a result, you now trust and respect yourself. Refusing to carry the sins of others within your body and life, you listen now to your own needs and desires and meet them with tenderness and grace.
You’ve authored your own life. You now exert, initiate, and move on your own behalf, refusing to surrender except to your truest self and wisest voice. You’ve named your own gods, imagining the divine in your own image and likeness. You’ve designed a personal spirituality to inform your daily life.
You’re now in love with your own body, believing it is enough, just as it is and celebrating its rhythms and cycles as an exquisite resource. You now honor the body of the Goddess in your changing body and celebrate the accumulation of your years and wisdom. No longer hiding, you are present and purposeful.
You now value the women in your life. They are appreciated as friends and allies, not competitors. You gather with them in every season and situation of life to be reminded of the truth about yourself when you forget and of the way home to yourself when you get lost.
You imagined into being this woman within you! You are now this woman.
Now it is time to share the poem with your daughters and granddaughters, clients and friends to remind them of the truth of who they are. Now it is time for you to take up Gerda Lerner’s challenge found in her classic book, The Creation of Patriarchy:
Perhaps the greatest challenge to thinking women is the challenge to move from the desire for safety and approval to the most “unfeminine” quality of all—that of intellectual arrogance, the supreme hubris which asserts to itself the right to reorder the world. The hubris of the god-makers, the hubris of the male system-builders.
Our world is fueled by fear, addicted to power, and severely out of balance. For the sake of all our children, we must reorder the world. It’s time to join, march, act up with these, and many other, powerful activist organizations:
Reorder the world from ongoing war to a just peace with CodePink to be certain all the children of the world live to see their dreams fulfilled: http://www.codepink.org
Reorder the world from racism to racial justice with Black Lives Matter to be certain all our children take another breath and see another day: http://www.blacklivesmatter.com
Reorder the world from corporatism and greed to a just economy with Fight for Fifteen to be certain every low-wage worker gets at least $15 an hour and union rights: http://fightfor15.org
Our beloved planet is in desperate need of women who use their personal and communal resources to design life-affirming solutions to address the challenges confronting humankind. Women who give birth to images of inclusion, poems of truth, rituals of healing, experiences of transformation, relationships of equality, strategies of peace, institutions of justice, and households of compassion.
In this New Year, may you be infused with dynamic self-love, filled with supreme arrogance, and guided by purposeful engagement as you assert to yourself the right to reorder all the worlds you inhabit! For the sake of our children and children’s children. And so it is.
